Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince

Title: Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince (12)

Year: 2009

Running Time: 153 minutes

Director: David Yates

Cast: Daniel Radcliffe (Harry), Rupert Grint (Ron), Emma Watson (Hermione)

Notes: Won numerous awards including some for the whole series, nominated for two BAFTAs and one Oscar.

Rating: 10

Thoughts:   A book allows Harry to excel and also to learn more about his enemy's past.

Somehow they manage to take this up another level, with the same familiar strengths wholly enhanced by a new character, Professor Slughorn, played by the excellent Jim Broadbent.

He brings in some natural humour and is superb in every way. That allows the rest of the film to simply progress the wider narrative.

And here we see more death with Professor Dumbledore sacrificing himself to ultimately support the broader quest. We also get to see the darker, Voldemort inspired, side to Harry when he duels Malfoy.

It's a very well-handled shift in the character and again progresses the broader story. Just as the series risks feeling overlong, this film gives it new momentum.
