Thoughts:   A fallen warrior must rise against a tyrant to avenge his dishonoured master.

This is a Japanese story but for reasons beyond me, quasi-medieval they decide to take it out of that setting and place it in some quasi medieval European location.

Owen plays it all very dark and brooding, and his early interchanges with Freeman are excellent. Sadly the former ends up chopping off the latter's head way too early.

Owen's acting is superb but the rest of the characters feel quite typical. There is little to excite. The plot is okay, if predictable most of the time, and they then end it on a sort of cliffhanger. Maybe.

This film has lots of components but they don't come together well. The casting, especially of Freeman, was undoubtedly just to sell it.

After a decent start, and with a strong finish, cliffhanger aside, the middle bulk is a little flabby. It all just feels too out of balance.
