Thoughts:   A dystopian world sees people divided into factions based on their virtues.

Tris finds she doesn't fit, a divergent, and discovers a plot to eradicate the divergents.

Five factions exist to make the limited, and partially ruined, world as efficient as possible. At a coming of age event teenagers choose and when Tris goes against the expected, a whole series of events begins.

She has picked the edgiest of the groups and begins a lengthy trial to be accepted, Woodley playing this part superbly. She is bold, vulnerable, skilled and more.

Her guide is the mysterious Four, and James adds more to the film. In fact, the cast is all strong, the characters well defined, perhaps helped by there being a book to use for research.

The initial training phase of the film bounds along as the challenges become harder. Then the main plot opens and the masterful Winslet comes into her own as a smooth yet dangerous leader.

The war-ravaged Chicago looks great and is a suitable backdrop. The ensemble is excellent.

Perhaps the story is basic - young person finds they are the one and overcomes obstacles - but it is well told, and then superbly adapted. It's a great start to the series.
