Title: The Kingmaker (15)

Year: 2005

Running Time: 92 minutes

Director: Lek Kitaparaporn

Cast: Gary Stretch (Fernando De Gamma), John Rhys-Davies (Phillippe De Torres), Cindy Burbridge (Maria De Torres)

Notes: Nominated for two awards.

Rating: 2

Thoughts:   A Portuguese soldier of fortune travels to the Orient to avenge his father and find wealth. Enslaved after a shipwreck, he ends up fighting in a local war.

Rhys-Davies, although fairly badly miscast, is the clear star of this film and the rest lack anything much at all. It's a shame as this is an interesting story based on true events.

Some of the acting is awful. Too many Asian roles are taken by Western actors, and that is a summary of how this all looks.

It has fairly weak dialogue too and by the end, I really didn't care if the hero survived or not.

They attempt an epic battle that becomes laughable as the armies collide, and it just gets worse. Promising story, terrible execution.
